Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as Prime Minister of Canada. He said in a press conference on Monday that he will resign as party leader and prime minister after the party elects a new leader. He has a good reputation in the international arena as a progressive politician, feminist, environmentalist, and activist for the rights of refugees and minorities. Despite this, why has he faced extreme opposition from the opposition and even within his own party for the past few months? Due to all these obstacles, the Canadian Parliament has been completely paralyzed for several months. Trudeau’s disaster demands analysis.
Justin Trudeau was elected as the Prime Minister of Canada for the first time in 2015 as the candidate of the Liberal Party and was elected as the surprise of the youth. When he became Prime Minister, world leaders like Barack Obama, Angela Merkel, Shinzo Abe and David Cameron were in power. After this, he has been leading the country for almost a decade. New elections are scheduled to be held in Canada by October 20. Before that, he was forced to leave the party leadership and the prime ministership. However, the people of Canada will never forget him for things like improving relations between indigenous peoples, supporting climate policy, managing the situation during the Covid pandemic, introducing benefits for children to alleviate poverty, etc.; But during Trudeau’s rule, the price of everything increased by about 30 to 50 percent, rent and house prices almost doubled, failure to keep big promises, showing excessive humanity and bringing in a large number of refugees from Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine and various African countries on visit visas, unemployment rate increased to 6.8 percent, etc. Public discontent remains at home. Listening to the words of allies, spending a huge amount of money ($19.5 billion) in the Ukraine war, imposing various types of taxes on the people to cover this huge deficit, etc. have also become his last resort. In the emerging situation, the next parliamentary session in Canada was scheduled to be held on January 27, 2025. The opposition Conservative Party brought a no-confidence motion against him within two or three working days of the session. In this, his government would have fallen due to the opposition of 50 MPs from his own party. So Prime Minister Justin Trudeau showed his wisdom by announcing his resignation before that day, rather than waiting for it. Although the departure of a handsome, eloquent, smart, and compassionate Prime Minister like him was unexpected by many. However, it would not be surprising if he returned to politics in his own glory after this resignation.
Who came to power or not in Canada is not our main topic of discussion. In fact, political leaders need to know when to leave power. Such a mentality is a safeguard for democracy. He has actually taken such a decision without resorting to fights and clashes like the leaders of developing countries. We have already seen in England, Theresa May resigned on the Brexit issue, Boris Johnson on the Partygate scandal, and Liz Truss resigned after only 45 days in power. Similarly, after his party’s defeat in the European Parliament elections, French President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the parliament and announced early elections within an hour of the opposition’s demand. In other words, neither of them tried to cling to power nor did they wait for another election. In fact, this is the beauty of democracy, which is present in countries like Europe and America; but it is still unimaginable in the case of third world countries. Therefore, Justin Trudeau’s resignation announcement is instructive for the leaders of the developing world. Moreover, we can also fully understand from this incident that the main goal of those in power should be to prioritize the interests of their own citizens above all else.
