Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) ATM Shamsul Huda has passed away. He breathed his last at his residence in the capital at 9 am on Saturday (July 5). He was 83 years old at the time of his death.
According to family sources, his body is currently kept in the cold storage of United Hospital. The funeral and burial schedule will be decided after his daughter returns from the United States. As per the initial decision, he may be buried at Banani Cemetery.
ATM Shamsul Huda has served in various important positions in the administration during his long career. He joined the Pakistan Civil Service in 1966. After the independence of Bangladesh, he was included in the Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS).
He served as the Subdivision Administrator (SDO) of Bagerhat, Secretary to the Ministry of Water Resources and Finance, and Managing Director of Bangladesh Krishi Unnayan Bank. He retired from government service in 2000.
He was later appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner in 2007. Under his leadership, the 2008 National Parliamentary elections were held, which were praised at home and abroad as a free, fair, and acceptable election.
