A devastating fire broke out on Thursday (October 16) at Al Hamid Textile, a nine-story garment factory located in the Chattogram Export Processing Zone (CEPZ). The blaze started around 2 p.m., when more than 500 workers were reportedly inside the building.
Fifteen units of the Fire Service and Civil Defense rushed to the scene and began battling the flames shortly after receiving the emergency call at about 1:45 p.m., said Alamgir Hossain, Deputy Assistant Director of the Chattogram Fire Service.
“The cause of the fire is still unknown. So far, no casualties have been reported, and efforts are continuing to bring the blaze under control,”
Alamgir Hossain told Somoy Ekhon.
Witnesses said panic spread rapidly among workers and locals as thick smoke engulfed the area. Many workers managed to evacuate the building in time. Authorities fear significant losses from the fire, which gutted large portions of the factory.
